My Year Of Eating Like The World Ended (Report 5 – Fighting Isolation)

Sunday 10.7.2018

The start of week five.  Today was kind of an underwhelming day.  I’ve got tons of tricky writing to do, and I can’t seem to get motivated.  Some days are like that.  The muse is fickle, but the best cure for writer’s block is more writing, so I’ll grind through it until the engine fires.  A slow slog.

Took today off.  Need a change of pace and a change of scenery.  Decided to meet up with a young, likeminded couple to see if I could do some trading.  Offloaded my 8 bags of Thai Coconut Curry.  It took most of the day, because it involved three hours of driving, but mission accomplished!  In exchange for the 8 bags of food I can’t eat, I got:

  • 4 pork roasts
  • 3 giant chicken breasts
  • 2 bags of cheese (freezer fodder)
  • And a dozen eggs

I gave up 40 meals and didn’t get 40 meals back.  On the other hand, for me, those represented zero meals (the whole, ‘allergic to coconut and not wanting to die thing’), so anything would have been a gain, and I got stuff I can use to trade for additional goodies.

My like-minded friends took me to Goodwill after we concluded our trade, and I found my next silly hat (see pic – I collect silly hats as a reminder that I should never take myself too seriously…don’t judge me, it’s a thing.  LOL – also picked up a few new books since my entertainment options are fairly limited for the duration of this experiment).  I also couldn’t resist the urge to grab a pack of “male guards” sitting on the shelf, so got my picture taken holding those as well – looks like I’m ready for an all night writing session now! (kidding!)

I lingered with company, not wanting to go back to my isolation, but eventually…duty called.

Continuing to feel isolated today.  The rain’s not helping.  Did manage to bang out some writing – one of the big assignments down – eleven more to go.  Should be a stellar month, but man…between the bad food and the sense of isolation, it’s hard to stay focused.

Still trying to fight that feeling of isolation.  No rain, but a surprisingly chilly, gray day.  Did some more trading today (Mike).  Swapped a roast and a sirloin for 2 squash, 2 sweet potatoes, and a Digiorno Supreme pizza.  That’s quite a treat!  Planning on eating it today, so glad I skipped breakfast.

Breakfast: Nothing

Lunch/Dinner: Digiorno Supreme Pizza (2160 calories)

Half coffee: 150 calories

Total: 2310

The trading and pizza made me feel better, even though I’m so full I can barely move.  Glad I did that.  Maybe now I can get focused and get my ass back to work.

Rain today.  All day.  Bleh.

Revisited an old recipe I had invented some time ago – Supernovas!  Baked a sweet potato (a regular one would work too…doesn’t matter), put butter, a bit of brown sugar and salt, the last of the bacon bits from the salad a couple weeks ago, sautéed some squash with a serving of mixed veggies from the frozen stock and covered the potato.  Delicious breakfast!

More rain today.  All Day.  Again.  Had to turn the heater on for the first time this evening.  Didn’t leave it running all night, just turned it on the last two hours at the keyboard to take the chill off the house.  Second big writing piece done.  Feels like I might be gaining some momentum.

Breakfast: Cream of Evil (340 calories)

Lunch: Canned Evil (460 calories) w/ a side of squash (last of that) ~50 calories

Dinner: Nothing

Half Coffee: 150 Calories

Total: 1000 calories

And…there goes the momentum.  A number of smaller, low-paying gigs today, but I’m having such a strong month to this point that it barely dents the daily average.  Still, feels like it took the wind out of my sails a bit.

In other news, an important opportunity has presented itself.  I was planning on making a big extra payment to the loan I have outstanding, but an attractive asset price caused me to redirect.  Rather than making a $1k loan payment, I move $900 into my Long Term Investment account, so that’s up to $15,500/20,000.

Still, unless I have just an unbelievable writing month, that’s going to slow down the loan repayment – no realistic way I can get rid of it by the year’s end now.  Pushes it back to the end of January.  Not a huge deal, but something to keep a watchful eye on.

Saturday 10.13.2018

I have an even mix of medium and small writing gigs to do today, which should see me move the ball forward a decent amount.  Cold this morning.  Have the heater again and am drinking my coffee hot this morning.  Brr.

As I’m writing this, I’ve just finished the morning’s Cream of Evil ration.  I’ve emptied ALL the bags of the cursed stuff and put it in a big container I’m pulling from every morning.  It’s actually somewhat heartening to watch the level slowly drop, knowing that when I empty the bucket, my taste buds will never again be affronted by the stuff.  Yuck.

Planning to eat yet another can of evil this evening – I swear the cans reproduce when I’m not looking.  I’m not sure I’m ever going to reach the end of my supply of this nasty food.  These items will definitely NOT get invited back to the stock rebuild at the end of the experiment.  Dayum.

With that in mind, I’m going to publish this and get back to the writing.  The cold started messing with my hands this morning, making the arthritis flare up, so writing will probably be on the slow side today.  I know it has taken forever to pound out this short journal entry, so…we’ll see how it goes.

Breakfast: Cream of Evil (340 calories)

Lunch: Canned Evil (460 calories)

Just the one.  Bust two pallets a month for 2 gals of milk, half a dozen eggs and a venison steak.

Until next time!
