My Year Of Eating Like The World Ended Report 14 – Odd Thomas

I’m more isolated than ever, on account of the snow, but minus the depression, it’s not so bad.  Here’s how the week went.

Sunday 12.9.2018

Road closed.  Cold outside, but the power’s still on, so I resolved to make the most of it.  Nose to grindstone; let’s bang out some work!

A super productive day.  Had Amazon Prime playing in the background, but honestly couldn’t tell you what was on.  Just noise.  Major progress!

Breakfast: Brown Sugar and Maple oatmeal (one serving) 180 calories (note: STILL mixing this with my wretched strawberry cream of wheat so I don’t have to endure it – and it has the advantage of stretching the stuff I do like!)

Lunch: Bowl of chicken noodle soup (500 calories)

Dinner: 2 Servings of Frankenchili! (from last week) (2 servings) (1200 calories”)

Half Coffee: 150 calories

Total: 2030 calories

 

Monday 12.10.2018

Road more or less open.  Still a couple of icy patches here and there, and of course, there’s plenty of snow on the ground, but none of it is in the way of me getting where I want to go, so – best of both worlds.  Pretty, but not in the way.  Got all dressed up to go smite the snow off my car, which was actually quite a process.

Used my staff to break the snow into big chunks and slide it off the hood of my car.  Once I got the hood cleared off, started on the windshield.

After that, started on the front half of the top, scooping it to the hood, then off the front.

Once that was done, I cleared enough of a path that I could open the car door.  Crawled in, cranked it up and turned the defroster on high so it could do some of the work for me.

Then got out and worked on the back half of the car.

After about an hour, I had it clear of snow.  Then climbed in and backed out, ramming the snow bank behind the car.

Got stuck once, but did some rocking and the tires found purchase and I got clear.

Made it to town.  Topped off the gas tank and got my BP meds, then back to the mountain top.  Here’s me, all dressed up and ready to do battle with the snow.

Later in the evening, I heard a strange sound at the window.  Tapping.  Too rhythmic to be a bird.  I got curious and turned to look (it was behind me as I was at the desk writing).

A grey cat at the window, tapping frantically to be let in!

I called Mike and asked him if he’d gotten a new cat.  Yep.  Tom.

Okay – I told him Tom had dropped by for a visit and that I was letting him in out of the cold.  Mike said that was fine and thanked me.

I opened the door and in trots Tom, like he owns the place.

Tom is a young cat (maybe a year old), and…kinda stupid.  You can tell he was also raised around dogs because he acts a lot like a dog, which freaked my cats out.

There was some hissing and grumbling, but Tom finally settled in on the cat bed to take a nap and get warm.

He seemed pretty content, so wound up staying the night.

I didn’t really like his name, which prompted me to formalize it to Thomas, which brought to mind Odd Thomas, a Dean Koontz novel  So now he’s simply known as Oddy.  It fits, because he really is a bit strange.

There was some small amount of ruckus as Tom found his place in the pecking order.  Patches grudgingly accepted him but laid the smack down a few times to make sure he knew he was a guest in HER domain.

Stupid cat or not, he got the message after the third or fourth beatdown and promptly fell into line.

Jack hid because that’s what Jack always does, and Bella seems genuinely traumatized by this interloper, which is funny, because two years ago, she was in Tom’s exact position.  Some extra snuggles made it okay though.  She’ll be fine, and we now have a part time live in house guest.

Despite the interruption of the arrival of Odd Thomas, another strong writing day.

Breakfast: 1 serving of multi-grain cereal (180 calories)

Lunch: Split pea soup (300 calories)

Dinner: BIG bowl of Frankenchili (3 servings) 1800 calories

Half Coffee: 150

Total: 2430 calories

 

Tuesday 12.11.2018

Decided to reorganize the pantry.  More gaps are appearing, and I just made them even bigger.

I’ve got a growing collection of empty coffee tins, so I decided to put them to good use.

Took most of my oatmeal and cereal (still have a few bags in reserve) and filled the coffee tins:  One with strawberry oatmeal (which I still haven’t tried), one with brown sugar/maple, another with apple oatmeal, and a fourth with more multi-grain cereal.

Easier to get to them and they’ll certainly last long enough in their new containers that I won’t have to worry about them “going bad” or anything.

Also worked out a better way to prepare the cereal/oatmeal.

Just boil the water, put the cereal/oatmeal in my bowl and pour the water into the bowl.  Then I don’t have to wash the pot.  I like not having to wash the pot.  That works for me, so that’s the new standard.

Tom was busy last night.  He attacked the loaf of bread on the kitchen table.  About a third of the loaf has kitty teeth marks and claw marks in it, but the rest can still be used.  It’ll start getting stale, but I’ll just start eating more of it.

Patches was demanding my attention.  It took me a while to work out what she wanted, but what she wanted was to be wrapped up like a feline burrito.  Guess she’s cold today. 🙂

Lunch: PB&J (230 calories)

Dinner: PB& J (230 calories) & multi-grain cereal later (180) total = 410

Half coffee: 150 calories

Total: 970 calories

 

Wednesday 12.12.2018

I’ve got one rule in my world.  The people in my life say what they’ll do, and they do what they say.  Sure, there are exceptions – there are times when life conspires in such a way that that’s just not possible, but the overwhelming majority of the time, that’s what needs to happen, because that’s what I do.

I have no patience for people who don’t do what they say they’ll do, and I can count on one hand (with fingers left over) the number of times I have failed to keep a commitment.

I use a two-strike rule.  The first time you do it – that’s free.  Maybe you don’t know me.  Maybe you don’t understand that’s the expectation.  But when it happens, I’ll make sure you DO know.

If it happens again, and unless there’s a damned good reason for not keeping a commitment – you’re out.  Don’t need you in my life.  You don’t get a third chance.

Sharon is, of course, the exception, but every exception has its limits, and if my patience and understanding is ever taken as weakness or taken advantage of…well, that is something I will not abide.  I just won’t HAVE it.

So – it looks like I’ll be spending Christmas and New Year’s alone.  So be it. ☹

Found a bag of meatballs in the bottom drawer of the freezer.  They’re so crusted in ice that they almost certainly have freezer burn, but I don’t care.  They’re going into a batch of freeze-dried mac and cheese to make some more “doom sketti.”  No sauce, but I’ve got some ketchup and a few spices – we’ll make it work.

Lunch: PB&J x 2 (460)

Dinner: 2 servings of Doom Sketti (Roughly 2k calories for the bag, with meatballs, so 800 calories here)

Half Coffee: 150 calories

Total: 1770 calories

 

Thursday 12.13.2018

Bummed out about the situation with Sharon, but throwing myself into my work.  Another epic writing day.

Breakfast: Brown Sugar and Maple Oatmeal – 2 servings (360 calories)

Lunch: Nothing

Dinner: 2 servings of Doom Sketti (800 calories)

Half Coffee: 150 calories

Total:  1310 calories

 

Friday 12.14.2018

A repeat of yesterday.  Cold.  Tom still with us, and still finding his “place” in the Pride, so the day was occasionally interrupted by spats, some of them serious enough to cause me to intervene but for the most part, that’s cat business.  They need to work it out on their own, unless they start hurting each other or breaking stuff.

Breakfast: Can of split pea soup (300 calories)

Lunch: 2 boxed dinners (meatloaf) (540 calories)

Dinner: 1 serving of Doom Sketti (400)

Half Coffee:  150 calories

Total:   1390 calories

 

Saturday 12.15.2018

Long night last night.  Tom was restless and was tapping the window to get OUT.  I listened to it for thirty minutes before getting up and scolding him, but…he’s dumb.  The message did not get through.

Thirty minutes later I had to get up again.

Finally, after the third time, I let him out.  Thirty minutes later, he was tapping at the window wanting back IN.

So…I let him back in.

Then a bit later, he wanted back out.

By now, I’m getting frustrated.  I got up, grabbed him by the scruff.  Locked eyes with him to begin the message.  Then hissed right in his face.  Pulled him against me and growled in his ear, then nipped his ear until he squawked.  Held him at eye level and locked eyes again to end the message.  Not the first time I’ve bitten an animal but didn’t draw blood this time.

Message received.  He decided it would be better to take a nap and slept thru the night.  Thank God.

So another week down, and another solid day of writing.  I think I’m getting the hang of this.

Didn’t watch or listen to anything memorable this week – mostly just kept nose to grindstone.  If this pace keeps up, it’s going to be an epic month.  Already this month, in addition to putting the last $2k into the Long Term Investment (LTI) fund to close out that project, I’ve retired about $1k of the debt, which is better than I’d hoped for December.  We’ll see how the rest of the month goes.
